Considering Adoption: A FAQ for Birth Mothers
We understand that considering adoption for your baby is a difficult and emotional decision. This FAQ aims to answer some common questions you might have and provide resources to help you navigate this process.
What is adoption?
Adoption is the legal process where a child becomes part of a family. You, the birth parent, choose a loving adoptive family to raise your child.
Are there different types of adoption?
Yes, there are three main types:
- Open Adoption: Allows you select the level of ongoing contact between you and the adoptive family.
- Closed Adoption: There is no ongoing contact after the placement.
What are the benefits of adoption for my child?
Adoption provides your child with a stable and loving home, with parents who can offer them the financial and emotional support they need to thrive.
What are my rights as a birth mother?
Your rights vary depending on your location. However, you generally have a say in choosing the adoptive family and the level of contact you desire (if considering open adoption). You also have the right to change your mind before parental rights are relinquished.
Will adoption be financially difficult for me?
No, we offer financial assistance to cover medical expenses related to pregnancy and birth.
Can I change my mind after placement?
Adoption laws vary by state. Generally, there is a short window of time after the birth where you can revoke your consent to adoption. However, after this period, the adoption is final.
What kind of emotional support is available?
We offer free counseling services for as long as you need. We can also connect you with support groups.
What happens during the adoption process?
The process can differ according to your needs but here's a general outline:
- Initial Consultation: You'll meet with an adoption counselor to discuss your situation and explore your options.
- Developing an Adoption Plan: You'll decide the type of adoption (open, closed, etc.) and create a profile of the ideal adoptive family for your child.
- Matching: The agency will match you with potential adoptive families based on your preferences.
- Meeting the Adoptive Family (Optional): In open adoptions, you might have the opportunity to meet the adoptive family beforehand.
- Counseling: You'll receive counseling to help you prepare emotionally for the placement.
- Hospital Stay and Placement: After the birth, you'll spend time at the hospital and finalize the adoption with legal paperwork.
- Post-Placement Support: We offer ongoing support groups or counseling for birth mothers after placement.
What if I'm not sure if I want to choose adoption?
It's okay to be unsure. This is a major decision. We provide resources and free confidential counseling to help you explore all your options including parenting resources in case you decide to parent.
How will my baby feel about being adopted?
Many adopted children feel loved and cherished by their adoptive families. There are resources available to help adoptive families discuss adoption with their children in an open and honest way.
Can I contact my child after the adoption?
This depends on the type of adoption you choose. In an open adoption, you can have ongoing contact with the child and adoptive family through letters, emails, or visits. In a closed adoption, there is no direct contact. Remember its okay to choose closed adoption if thats what is best for your situation, we will help you through it.
What if the adoptive family I choose doesn't live near me?
Some birth mothers prefer to choose adoptive families who live close by, while others are comfortable with long-distance placements. The decision is entirely yours.
